Burial of Archbishop Peter of Chicago and Mid-America
Burial of ArchbishopPeter of Chicago and Mid-America
Many bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia have found their last resting place on the grounds of the Holy Trinity Monastery, the spiritual center of the church. Especially those who started their monastic path in the monastery elected to arrange to have a place on the sacred grounds of the monastery.
Archbishop Peter graduated from the Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary, became cell-attendant to the future Metropolitan Laurus as well as his secretary and also was a professor at the seminary. Eventually he was tonsured and became a member of our brotherhood, and was raised to the episcopacy of the church with his place of service being in Chicago.
The funeral for the newly-reposed Vladyka Peter was on Saturday, November 16 at his cathedral in Chicago. Subsequently, his remains were brought to the monastery. On Monday, November 18, the First Hierarch of ROCOR, His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas arrived along with other bishops of ROCOR and the Serbian Church.
A memorial meal was arranged by Vladyka’s diocesan secretary, the Very Rev. Gregory Joyce. The Fund ForAssistance of ROCOR provided funding for a meal for the many clergy and pilgrims who arrived to show their last respects to Vladyka. The family of Archpriest Nikolai Tkatchev of Syracuse provided fried fish for over 150 people.
After the meal, a pannikhida was served for the soul of Vladyka in the cathedral, presided over by His Eminence, Metropolitan Nicholas, and co-served by His Eminence Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal and Canada, His Grace, Bishop Luke of Syracuse, Abbot of Holy Trinity Monastery, His Grace Bishop Seraphim of the Serbian Church and His Grace Bishop Jerome. The monastery-seminary choir sang the service.
At the end of the pannykhida, the remains of Vladyka were carried in procession to his final resting place, behind the cathedral in the brotherhood cemetery, next to the grave of his predecessor in the Chicago Diocese, Archbishop Alypy of blessed memory.
Thus the monastery’s grounds have been enriched by still one more of the archpastors of our Holy Church. May the memory of Vladyka Peter be eternal and may the Lord God give him eternal rest among the saints.
